South’s Parnell earns rare honor

South Medford junior Jaylin Parnell pulled off a rare accomplishment during recent voting for the all-Southwest Conference football team, with the 6-foot, 200-pound standout earning league player of the year honors on offense and defense.

Parnell shared offensive player of the year honors with junior teammate Robbie Patterson and the SWC champion Panthers were well-represented on the first team in voting by the conference’s coaches.

For his efforts, South Medford head coach Bill Singler was named SWC coach of the year for guiding his team to an undefeated run through the league.

Parnell led the Panthers in tackles from his linebacker spot and was the SWC’s leading rusher with 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns on 131 carries (7.9 yards per carry) during the regular season.

Patterson led the SWC with 1,880 yards passing after completing 132 of 210 passes with 23 TDs and three interceptions.

South Medford junior lineman Brandon Ditty and junior receiver/defensive back Chase Cota joined Parnell as the only players to earn first-team SWC honors on both sides of the ball.

Ditty helped anchor an offense that averaged 433 yards and 41 points per game and a defense that allowed 267 yards and 17 points per game, while Cota led the SWC with 729 yards and 10 TDs on 40 catches.

Also earning first-team honors for the Panthers were six other juniors in offensive guard Martin Laupola, offensive tackle Michael Cormier, slot receiver Kaleb Franklin, placekicker Jaalen Owens, linebacker Evan Dallas and safety Trent Snyder.

Franklin had 450 yards receiving and five TDs on 35 catches, while Owens was the league’s third-leading scorer behind Sheldon’s Tanner Zenke (108 points) and Parnell (84 points) with 79 points thanks to four field goals, 43 extra-points and four TDs.

Senior defensive lineman Tre Holmes was the only first-team all-SWC selection from North Medford, where he helped the Black Tornado limit opponents to 295 yards per game.
