Crater opens season with tourney win

CENTRAL POINT — Crater’s girls basketball team got one of the latest starts to the season in the Rogue Valley with Thursday’s opener but the Comets didn’t let that deter them in posting a 58-47 win over Henley in the first round of the Crater Basketball Invitational.

With 6-foot senior post Evie Kent leading the charge, Crater opened an 11-point lead by halftime and held on from there despite a late lull. Kent scored 12 of her team-high 15 points in the first half to help set the tone for the Comets (1-0), who next play South Albany (3-0) at 8 tonight in the second round.

“Evie Kent was the difference for us inside,” said Crater head coach David Heard. “They couldn’t deal with her.”

Kent received plenty of support, however, as the Comets totaled seven players with at least five points. Senior point guard Mallory Heard had seven points, eight assists, eight rebounds and three steals, sophomore Sydney Gray added eight points, seven rebounds and five steals and junior Aleesa Yother chipped in seven rebounds and six points.

“It’s our first game so I’m happy about getting the win and pretty happy with the balance of scoring we had,” said Heard, whose team also forced 25 turnovers.

Junior Tanner Higgins was 4-for-4 from 3-point range and finished with 22 points for Henley (1-2), which next plays Crescent Valley (0-1) at 5:45 p.m. today at Scenic Middle School.
