Mitchell sparks South to tourney win

RED BLUFF, Calif. — South Medford’s boys basketball team broke open a close game at halftime with a third-quarter blitz sparked by senior Victor Mitchell on the opening day of the Red Bluff Holiday Classic on Thursday.

Mitchell scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in a 21-point third quarter by the Panthers as they won going away, 64-42, over Orestimba of nearby Newman, California.

“It was his energy tonight that really brought it,” said South Medford head coach James Wightman. “He played the whole third quarter and really gave us a lift.”

Will Winans added eight points and a host of Panthers (3-2) finished with six points. South Medford will next face Pleasant Valley of California at 5:30 p.m. today in the tournament semifinals.

South Medford trailed after one quarter and led only 24-20 at halftime before breaking the game open with a dominant second half.

“I really thought that our transition got to them in the second half,” said Wightman. “We got up into the passing lanes and got some steals and some easy buckets.”
