Comets faring well at Winter Kickoff

GRANTS PASS — The Crater wrestling team advanced nine into today's semifinals at the 30-school Grants Pass Winter Kickoff with quarterfinal triumphs on Friday.

Eagle Point had five wrestlers move to the semifinal round.

Comets Zeth Brower (106 pounds), Angel Diaz (106), Hunter Grant (120), Dallas Howard (132), Logan Meek (152), Jace Godley (160), James Pendleton (220), Beau Crawford (220) and Cam Sweet (285) all picked up wins to advance to the semifinals.

For the Eagles, Freddy Barajas (106), Thomas Zomerdyk (113), Bradey Thrash (120), Chance McMullen (120) and Taylor Lawler (220) advanced.

Cascade Christian's Ryan Vidlak (106) and Gabe Vidlak (113) both secured quarterfinal victories, along with South Medford's Ryan Beck (182) and Ashland's Jade Boucher (195).

Grants Pass has six in the semifinals: Barrett Titus (113), Kaleb Murphy (120), Tyler Bellon (126), Vincent Washington (138), Trajan Hurd (170) and Jordan Main (195).

Team scores weren’t available at press time.

In the girls one-day exhibition tournament, Ashland claimed first out of 12 teams. The Grizzlies had 105.5 points, Grants Pass was third (76), Phoenix fifth (57), Crater sixth (54) and North Medford ninth (26).

The local champions were North Medford's Kassidy Boorman (106), Grants Pass' Harley Miner (113), Crater's Makiah Palmer (120), Phoenix's Emma Truex (126), Grants Pass' Kaitlyn Dara (132) and Olivia DeMars (138) and Ashland's Aspyn Gottschalk (145), Nicolette Irvine (152) and Joanne Lemley (170).

TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: At Reno, Nev., North Medford was 51st out of 103 teams after the opening day of Tournament of Champions.

Chase Mitchell (106 pounds) advanced to today’s quarterfinals after going 3-0 on Friday for the Black Tornado. Teammate Justin Geyer (182) is still alive after bouncing back from a third-round loss with a consolation victory. He was 2-1.


NEWPORT INVITATIONAL: At Newport, Alec Shepherd won a pair of races for Phoenix at the seven-school Newport Invitational.

Shepherd was first in the 100-yard butterfly (58.89 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.97). The Pirate boys (who finished fourth overall) were third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.87).

The Phoenix girls claimed sixth.
