Orndoff, Panthers dominate in home opener

Senior Lauren Orndoff had 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists, senior Hannah Washington recorded 13 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals and the sixth-ranked South Medford girls basketball team beat McNary, 82-45, in the Panthers' home opener on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Ula Chamberlin went for 17 points and five steals and senior Jonnay Foote added 16 points and four steals for South, which led 43-19 at halftime.

The Panthers (4-2) shot 42 percent from the field with 28 rebounds and 20 steals while forcing 29 turnovers against the Celtics (3-4), who edged South in overtime in last year's state fourth-place contest.

Washington helped to contain University of San Diego signee Sydney Hunter to eight points.

McNary has lost four straight, including a 49-38 defeat to North Medford on Tuesday.

ASHLAND 43, MCKAY 24: At Corvallis, Mya Elder-Hammond scored 10 of her 14 points in the opening quarter and Ashland turned in its best defensive performance of the season as the Crescent Valley Tournament came to a close.

Elder-Hammond also had five rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Grizzlies (3-5), who were able to limit McKay’s star guard Leva Mike to just seven points and were active in the passing lanes with 21 steals.

NORTH MEDFORD 41, TUALATIN 37: At Lake Oswego, North Medford beat ninth-ranked Tualatin to claim the eight-team Lakeside Holiday Classic title.

Senior post Brad Allen had eight points, a career-high 18 rebounds, three assists and two steals, Tre Holmes seven points and Joey Hunter and Kaison Faust six points and six rebounds each for the Black Tornado (5-4).

North and Tualatin (5-2) were tied at 22 at halftime.

HERMISTON 92, ASHLAND 66: At Corvallis, Peyton Fuller drilled five 3-pointers and dropped in 18 points but it wasn’t enough for Ashland in the final round of the Crescent Valley Tournament.

Jake Hansen went for 14 points and Malik Pippa 11 for the Grizzlies (3-4).

Hermiston was led by Xavier Rambo’s 30 points.
