Dance sparks Crater to tourney win

MERLIN — Crater’s Garrett Dance was impressive in his first start of the season in the opening round of the Evergreen Bank Holiday Tournament.

The sophomore forward gave the Comets a needed offensive spark in a 56-43 victory over Del Norte of Crescent City, California, at North Valley High Wednesday.

Crater, which defeated Del Norte 61-42 in its opening game of the season, advances to the semifinals of the eight-school bracket at 3 p.m. today.

The 6-foot-4 Dance, who scored 12 points, earned a spot in the starting five because of his consistent play.

“He really does a good job of scoring inside the paint,” said Crater coach Chris Schmerbach. “He attacks the basket real well.”

The Comets (4-3) were paced by junior forward Kiefer Edwards’ 20-point, 10-rebound performance. Nate White, Crater’s senior point guard, dished out five assists and demonstrated good floor leadership.

“Nate White did an excellent job of organizing us on both ends,” said Schmerbach. “He made good decisions.”

The Comets outrebounded Del Norte, 32-27, and rallied to grab a 25-23 halftime lead.

“We were really efficient on the offensive end,” said Schmerbach. “We did a good job of sharing the basketball and taking what the defense was giving us. As the game wore on our depth was a factor.”
