Vranes, Edwards power Comets in semis

MERLIN — Mason Vranes and Kiefer Edwards combined for 47 points as Crater’s boys basketball team downed North Valley, 55-49, Thursday advanced to the championship game of the Evergreen Holiday Bank Tournament at North Valley High.

The Comets (5-3) square off for the title against Sutherlin at 3:45 p.m. today.

Vranes had a career-high 25 points and knocked down all six of Crater’s 3-pointers.

Edwards scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

MADISON 70, GRANTS PASS 53: At Gresham, Tyler Rund erupted for 29 points but Grants Pass couldn’t find an answer for Madison’s balanced offense in the Sam Barlow Tournament.

Andru Valadez and Taylor Anderson added nine points apiece for the Cavemen (3-7).

James Turnbull tallied 11 points for the Pirates (1-9), who were outscored 13-4 in the final period, and Thomas Skaff added nine.

VALLEY CATHOLIC 51, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 47: At Salem, Cascade Christian kept it close throughout but had its eight-game winning streak snapped in the semifinals of the Crusader New Year’s Invitational.

The Challengers (8-2) will go for third place today against Catlin Gabel at 5 p.m. at Corban University.

Carson Cochran paced the Challengers with 13 points and Joel McLemore added 11.

UMATILLA 64, ST. MARY’S 51: At Salem, Umatilla got hot and took over in the fourth quarter, derailing St. Mary’s in the Crusader New Year’s Invitational at Salem Academy.

The Crusaders (4-8) will finish up the tournament today at 6:30 p.m. against Westside Christian.

Umatilla led 42-41 before outscoring the Crusaders 22-10 in the final period.

Joe Johnson and Gavin Rajagopal scored 14 points apiece for the Crusaders, and Travis Danielson added 10.

RV ADVENTIST 69, SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN 48: At Beaverton, Trevor Haugen led the charge for Rogue Valley Adventist with 24 points and six rebounds as the Red Tail Hawks closed out the Valley 10 Tournament with a victory.

Nathaniel James registered 19 points, five assists and three steals for the Hawks (7-2) while Jared Cumbee supplied 12 points, nine assists and five steals.

RVA freshman Isaiah Christensen added eight points and 11 boards.
