Crater holds off Sutherlin to win tourney

MURPHY — Crater High juniors Mason Vranes and Cade Weaver got hot when the Comets needed a spark in the finals of the Evergreen Bank Holiday Tournament.

After Sutherlin cut the Comets' 20-point halftime lead to eight entering the final period, the Crater pair combined for 15 points in the fourth as the Comets held off the Bulldogs, 64-54, Friday at Hidden Valley High.

“A lot of their focus was on Kiefer Edwards after he scored 14 points in the first half,” said Crater coach Chris Schmerbach. “It opened things up for us. We looked to attack their zone and got some drive and kick opportunities.”

Vranes led the Comet (6-3) offense with 21 points and Weaver came off the bench to toss in 14.

“(Weaver) does a good job of getting into passing lanes and running the floor,” said Schmerbach. “He’s a good athlete.”

Edwards finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Comet senior point guard Nate White dished out eight assists.”

Crater shot 50 percent (9-18) from the field in the opening two quarters and led 37-17 at the break.

“We played our best first half of the season,” said Schmerbach. “We were crisp and together and a lot of guys played. We’re learning how to play with a lead. It’s something we haven’t had too much in the past.”
