Black Tornado wins twice in softball debut

SCIO — The North Medford softball team was anxious to get on the field for the first time this season and looked sharp doing so against two solid offensive squads on Friday at Scio High School.

The Black Tornado combined for 24 runs and 28 hits on the afternoon to pick up a 12-2 victory in five innings over Sprague before handing West Salem a 10-7 defeat.

Against Sprague, North Medford scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 12-2 lead. After Sprague failed to answer in the bottom of the frame, the Black Tornado captured the victory by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule.

North Medford’s Ashley Ripplinger and Taelor Mayben both went 3-for-4. Ripplinger had three RBIs and Mayben two while Alex Barry went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Rylan Austin finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Austin, who made her first two varsity starts, picked up both wins from the circle for the Black Tornado.

Against West Salem, the Black Tornado (2-0) tallied seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by Jordan Neathamer’s two-run triple. Neathamer finished with three RBIs and Mayben drove in two.

Also for North Medford, Alex Barry scored twice and collected three hits, as did Danyelle Milam, while Neathamer, Mayben, Mahal Miles and Lauren Barry all went 2-for-4.
