Croft, Crater stymie Liberty

CENTRAL POINT — Crater senior Matt Croft struck out four and allowed two hits with two walks and one hit batter and the Comets used an eight-run sixth inning to topple Liberty 12-1 in six innings on the opening day of the 11th annual Crater Spring Break Tournament Monday at Anhorn Field.

Jace Godley had two of Crater’s four hits in the sixth inning, including a two-run single, as the Comets moved to 5-0 overall entering today’s 5 p.m. game against Ridgeview.

Godley finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs while Sean Bartlett and Sebasten Boivin each went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs and Hunter Grant was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

“We played error-free baseball and Matt did a great job of just pounding the zone,” said Crater head coach Jay Campbell. “Anytime you do that you keep your fielders in the game and we played pretty sharp defensively behind him.”

Liberty (1-3) plays North Salem at 2 p.m. today.

In other tournament openers, Century beat North Salem 9-2, Ridgeview edged Franklin 6-4 and Grants Pass beat West Albany 12-2 in five innings.

SOUTH MEDFORD 10, PALMER (Colo.) 0, 6 inn.: At Phoenix, Ariz., South Medford junior Jacob Melton went 3-for-4 with three runs and a three-run home run in the sixth inning in the first game of the Coach Bob Invitational at Boulder Creek High.

Clint Campbell was 2-for-2 with one run scored and Jaalen Owens 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs for the Panthers (2-2), who play another Colorado team — Chatfield — at 1 p.m. today in the five-day tournament.

Jack Thompson allowed four hits and no walks in four scoreless innings for South.

NORTH MEDFORD 12, DEER VALLEY (Ariz.) 7: At Phoenix, Ariz., Tyler Seney drove in three runs and Justin Geyer hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning for North Medford, which took down tournament host Deer Valley at the Coach Bob Invitational.

Seney finished 2-for-2 and scored twice for the Black Tornado (2-2) while Geyer went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.

North Medford’s Kasey Buchanan went 3-for-4, knocked in two runs and scored twice with Ryan Sandoval going 2-for-2 to go with three runs and an RBI.

GRANTS PASS 12, WEST ALBANY 2, 5 inn.: At Central Point, Logan Zozaya’s bases-clearing three-run double in the fourth inning helped Grants Pass pull away from West Albany in the Crater Spring Break Tournament.

The Cavemen (3-3) scored five runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth.

Vincent Zavolta finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored for GP.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN SPLITS: At Murphy, Lance Shields sparked Cascade Christian’s five-run fourth inning where it rallied for a 10-8 victory over Cascade in Game 2 of the Hidden Valley Tournament.

The Challengers (3-3) were dealt a 3-1 setback by tournament host Hidden Valley in their opener.

Shields whittled into the Cougars’ 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run single before scoring on Kyle Reece’s single. Reece tied the game at 6-all by stealing home before Joel McLemore scored the go-ahead run to cap the frame.

Reece finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Shields, McLemore, Declan Payne and Jack West collected two hits each. McLemore and West also had two RBIs.

In the opener, McLemore went 2-for-3 and scored on West’s single in the first inning.
