Crater’s Brown, O’Connor qualify for state tourney

REDMOND — Two Crater girl golfers, freshman Haley Brown and sophomore Caitlyn O’Connor, finished strong in the Special District 2 regional qualifier at Eagle Crest Resort Saturday and advanced to the Class 5A state tournament.

Haley Brown placed third and O’Connor 10th.

The top four teams and top 10 individuals qualified for state May 15-16 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

Brown followed up an 80 on Friday with a second-round 89 for a 169 total. She finished behind Summit’s Olivia Loberg (154) and Pendleton’s Haley Greb (157) in the individual standings.

O’Connor shot a 94 Saturday for a 195 total. Eagle Point junior Ryleigh Gainey was a stroke back and just missed advancing.

Crater was one spot away from advancing as a team, placing fifth with an 812 score. It was followed by Ashland (858) and Eagle Point (878).

5A SPECIAL DISTRICT 2: At Redmond, Summit ran away with the regional qualifier at Eagle Crest Resort, from which the top five teams and top 10 individuals qualified for state May 15-16.

Eagle Point was the top local team, placing 12th following Day 2 competition. The Eagles’ Kyler DeVore shot an 82 to lead Rogue Valley players.

Girls Tennis

SWC DISTRICT: At Eugene, North Medford’s Krissy Ribeiro, the top-seeded singles player in the Southwest Conference, secured a berth in the state tournament on the first day of the district championships at Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.

Ribeiro had a bye in the first round and defeated South Eugene’s Thu Lee, 6-1, 6-0, in the second. She downed South Medford’s Alex Moore by the same scores in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals and finals are next Saturday at Roseburg. Those in the semifinals qualified for state May 18-20 at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

Moore posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Willamette’s Ella Hopkins and downed Roseburg’s Veronica Campbell, 6-2, 6-2.

Four South Medford doubles teams got to the quarterfinals, but each was stopped there, including fourth-seeded Izy Marcus and Anna Johnson.

The other Panther tandems were Anna Wilder and Maddie Day, Victoria Kelly and Corinne Thom, and Becca Newell and Ella Taylor.

TEAM SCORES: Roseburg 38, South Medford 24, South Eugene 24, Sheldon 23, Grants Pass 14, North Medford 7, Willamette 2.

Boys Tennis

SWC DISTRICT: At Roseburg, South Medford advanced two singles and two doubles teams to the quarterfinals on the first day of the Southwest Conference district championships before they were thwarted at Umpqua Tennis Center.

The semifinals and finals will be next Saturday in Roseburg. All those players advance to state May 18-20 at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

For the Panthers, Enoch Cunningham and Nolan Bartlett each won two singles matches before being eliminated by the No. 3 and 2 seeds, respectively.

In doubles, South Medford’s Luke Parks and Joe Von Strahl had a bye and a win before falling. Teammates Tanner Allen and Elliott Hikade claimed two matches before losing.
