North girls win regional, make state

CRESWELL — North Medford’s Dana Jung carded an 84 to lead the Black Tornado to victory and a berth in the 6A girls golf state tournament at the District 3 regional at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

The top two teams and top five individuals from the regional, made up of Southwest Conference and Great Valley League teams — advanced to state.

South Medford will send three individual players: Kirsten Reed, Emmie Starchvick and Morgan Couch.

4A/3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 4: At Bandon, Staesha Flock shot a 74 to take a six-shot lead in the individual race and lead St. Mary’s to a commanding team edge at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

St. Mary’s shot 370, while second-place Phoenix was at 423.

The top two teams and top five individuals qualify for state. Day 2 of the regional is today.

Kaylee Wu of St. Mary’s was second with an 80.

6A DISTRICT 3 REGIONAL: At Blue River, North Medford’s Jordan Davis missed out on a potential berth to the state tournament after he was assessed a two-stroke penalty at Tokatee Golf Club.

Davis originally finished the round on the cut line with an 81, tied with two others, but it was later ruled he made an illegal drop on the fifth hole after hitting his ball into the woods, resulting in an unplayable lie.

The penalty cost Davis two strokes, giving the senior a round of 83.

Coach Paul Steckbauer said he gave Davis incorrect advice on where to drop.

The top two teams and top five individuals qualified for state. No other local teams or individuals participated.

4A DISTRICT 3 REGIONAL: At Bandon, Camden Chose led Phoenix with an 88 on the first of the two-day event at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

Phoenix is in eighth place.

Klamath Union, with individual leader Craig Ronne, leads the way.

The top three teams and top five individuals advance to state.

3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 4 REGIONAL: At Bandon, Ben Quast shot a 2-over 74 to lead Cascade Christian into first place in the opening round of the two-day tournament at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

The Challengers shot 331 and lead Oakridge by 16 shots.

Max Lewis shot an 85 for St. Mary’s, which is tied with Lakeview (400) for fourth place.

The top four teams and top five individuals advance to state.

Boys Tennis

4A/3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 3: St. Mary’s top-seeded singles and doubles entries cruised into the semifinals of the tournament at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park, earning berths in the state tournament.

No. 1 seed Pratheev Weerakoon had a first-round bye, then won consecutive 6-0, 6-0 matches over Joshua Olson of Henley and Kendall Ehlin of North Bend.

In doubles, the top tandem of Ian Newton and Quinn Randall followed the same route, with a bye and consecutive wins. They downed Henley’s Josh Ledgerwood and Alex Gunnervall, 6-4, 6-2, and Marshfield’s Carlos Bravo and Jeremy Beasley, 6-1, 6-2.

The semifinals and finals are at 8:30 a.m. today at Fichtner-Mainwaring.
