Ashland netters sweep MWL honors
EUGENE — Ashland’s boys tennis team claimed the Midwestern League championships on the doubles and singles side, without dropping a set, as well as the team title Saturday at the Eugene Swim & Tennis Center.
Ashland’s Rox Rogers cruised to the finals in singles, beating Marist’s Evan Villano 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals, then followed suit in the championship match, beating Churchill’s Alle Banna 6-0, 6-0 to send him back to the Class 5A state tournament on a high note.
On the doubles side, Ashland’s Owen Dirienzo and Nur Shelton defeated Ridgeview’s Matt Allen and Tyson Nevelle 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. In the finals, they defeated Marist’s Joey Weilbruerer and Ben Hakala 7-5, 6-1 to advance into the state tourney as MWL champions.
The Grizzlies finished first in the team competition with 28 points to edge Marist (24).
The 5A state tournament will begin Wednesday at the Portland Tennis Center.

SWC CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Roseburg, North Medford’s undefeated and top overall seed Krissy Ribeiro fell short in the semifinals to the eventual champion at Roseburg High School.
Although Ribeiro suffered her first loss of the season, she had already secured a spot at state by reaching the semifinals, where she fell to Roseburg’s Sam Eichman, 6-0, 6-0. Ribeiro went on to take third place with a 6-2, 7-6 (8) victory over fourth-seeded Elizabeth Williams of Grants Pass.
Eichman downed fellow Roseburg teammate and No. 2 seed Adrianne Powell in the championship match for a 6-4, 6-3 win. Powell defeated Williams, 6-1, 6-4, in the semis.
South Medford’s Kinzlee Jordan shrugged off an opening-round loss in the tournament to win the consolation singles title after edging out teammate Rina Miyashita.

CLASS 4A/3A/2A/1A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3: Cascade Christian senior Claire Hawkins placed third and qualified in singles for the upcoming state tournament with a steady showing on Day 2 at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.
Hawkins clinched her spot at state with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over Alicia Lu of St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals. After falling 6-1, 6-0 to top-seeded Courtlyn Lam of Klamath Union in the semifinals, Hawkins returned in the third-place match to toppled Henley’s Ellie Mangan, 6-3, 6-1.
Mangan earlier ousted Eve Von Strahl of St. Mary’s from state consideration with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals.
Lam went on to claim the district singles title, while Junction City’s top-seeded tandem of Maddy Mehlbrech and Gabby Martinez claimed the doubles title. Klamath Union won the team title.
