North Medford’s Ross captures shot put

EUGENE — There isn’t much North Medford freshman Jaida Ross doesn’t do well.

She excels at writing, soccer and throwing the shot put, among other things, said her track and field coach, Piet Voskes.

“She has pride in performance in everything,” he said.

Ross authored an intriguing story on Saturday, winning the shot put state championship on the final day of the Class 6A meet at Hayward Field.

She reset her school record with a throw of 43 feet, 7¾ inches, 1¼ inches beyond her previous best, and became only the second North Medford girls state champion. Halley Folsom, who graduated in 2015, captured three titles.

Ross is believed to be the first North Medford freshman, boy or girl, to win state, said Voskes.

Ross was a nationally ranked thrower in middle school, but she never considered what she might do on the grandest high school stage until just recently. Her primary goal was to break the school record.

In eighth grade at Hedrick, she threw a 6-pound shot. The prep implement is about 3 pounds heavier.

“I thought high school would be a lot different because of the change in weight,” said Ross. “But my technique in middle school was terrible. So (throws coach Aaron Williams) fixed that, and it was, like, back to normal.”

The turnaround for Ross came in the annual Bob Newland Classic for sophomores and freshmen a month ago. She eclipsed 40 feet for the first time. A week later, she broke the Black Tornado record.

“That was kind of her blossoming point,” said Voskes of the Newland. “It was a confidence booster for her. I think she was trying to kind of be an athlete versus being a shot putter. She just had to learn the mechanics of it.”

Voskes likened her mindset to that of Folsom.

“She walks into the ring and just kind of looks around and says, ‘I plan to beat all of you,’” he said.

On Saturday, her chief competition was Shelby Moran of Sherwood, but Ross wasted little time asserting herself.

She focused on “ripping it,” or exploding through the throw, but she clipped the toe board and scratched.

That throw landed just short of the 46-foot line, which would have been a massive PR. She’d only been in that neighborhood once before, she said, and that was in a recent practice.

On her second attempt, she nailed her winning throw.

“It kind of all just clicked there,” she said. “I knew it wasn’t as good as the first throw, but it was out there.”

None of her remaining throws were over 42 feet.

Moran’s best throw, earning second place, was 42-7¼ on her next-to-last attempt.

North Medford senior Emily Shaw, who had the school record before Ross, was ninth at 37-6¼.

Ross also made it to state in the discus but didn’t advance to the finals.
