Kuykendall, Etheridge power Cavers

GRANTS PASS — Jordan Kuykendall’s sixth-inning insurance run proved to be the difference for Grants Pass to stave off Tigard for a 3-2 victory in the opening round of the Class 6A softball state playoffs on Monday.

With the victory, the 15th-seeded Cavers will travel to play No. 2 Jesuit on Wednesday.

Kuykendall singled home Haley Dougherty, who reached base with a one-out double, to give Grants Pass (18-9) a 3-1 lead. Tigard later tallied a run in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough.

The Cavers’ Alyssa Etheridge got the best of her Tigard counterpart Ashley Davis, allowing two runs on three hits to go with 10 strikeouts. She also walked six.

Kuykendall finished 2-for-4 and Kylie Rucker went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
