Phoenix rallies to down Klamath Union

The Phoenix volleyball team rallied past Klamath Union after dropping the opening game Tuesday, winning 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 to stay undefeated in Skyline Conference play.

“I was really proud of my team being down the first and coming back fighting so hard for the final three,” Phoenix coach Robin Akpan said.

In a balanced offensive attack for the Pirates (5-5, 2-0 Skyline), Kassidy Calhoun (three aces), Katelyn Hampton (four blocks, two aces) and Alexis Smith contributed 10 kills apiece.

Also for Phoenix, Sofia Tringolo finished with 19 assists, five kills and 10 digs, while Avery Reneau added four aces, seven kills and two blocks.

“Things are starting to gel for us,” Akpan said. “I think we’re looking for what our identity is, and I think we’re doing a really good job of finding our niche.”

NORTH MEDFORD 3, SOUTH EUGENE 0: At Eugene, Lauren Barry had a strong all-around night to lead North Medford in the Southwest Conference match, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.

Barry led the Black Tornado (10-5, 3-1 SWC) in kills (10), aces (eight) and digs (13).

Defensively, North’s Allie Hertager and Alex Barry each had nine digs. Barry added 26 assists, and Kylie Pauck racked up nine kills.

SHELDON 3, GRANTS PASS 1: At Grants Pass, Sheldon dropped just its fourth set of the season, winning 25-20 25-19, 16-25, 25-17.

The Irish (12-0, 5-0) were led by Mackenzie Borek with nine kills, five blocks and three aces, and Emma Newman who added six kills and five blocks.

CRATER 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Central Point, Eagle Point led 20-15 in Game 3 but Crater answered by running off 10 straight points to sweep the Midwestern League match.

Outside hitter Nehkyah Ellis had 11 digs, five kills and two aces to lead the Comets (5-2, 4-1 MWL), who never trailed in the first two games. Also for Crater, middle hitter Maya Van Hook had six kills and three blocks, outside hitter Sydney Gray added six kills, two blocks and one ace and setter Jadyn Carothers chipped in 27 assists.

For the Eagles (5-5, 1-4), Ryleigh Gainey had six kills, two blocks and 11 digs, Aly Scheffler contributed four kills, two blocks and seven digs, Nauvoo Beal finished with 18 assists, three digs, two blocks and one ace and Aliah Darling added seven digs and four aces.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: Caroline McMahon posted 13 kills and 10 aces, leading Cascade Christian to a 25-6, 25-8, 25-10 Southern Cascade League victory over Illinois Valley.

Also for the Challengers (9-1, 2-0), Alyssa Vaughn put down nine kills and served four aces and Allison Winter dished 30 assists.

ST. MARY’S 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: Katie Rietmann produced nine kills and three blocks as St. Mary’s won the Southern Cascade League home match, 27-25, 25-13, 25-9.

Abbie Christman was 16-for-18 serving with seven aces. She served points 11 to 22 in Game 3. The Crusaders had 16 aces.

Ashley Gurr chipped in 17 assists, and Hallie Shean five kills and six digs for St. Mary’s (2-8, 1-0 SCL). Rogue River is 3-3 and 0-2.
