Undefeated Crusaders capture district crown

With the District 5 crown all but wrapped up, the St. Mary’s boys soccer team made its title official Monday, completing a perfect season in the league with a 6-0 victory over Rogue River at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

“It feels great,” said Crusaders coach Eisa Tia Tutu. “Now we know we can play anyone in the state.”

The Crusaders finished 12-0 in the District 5 and 12-1-1 overall. Their first-round opponent in the state playoffs on Nov. 1 hasn’t been determined.

St. Mary’s scored four first-half goals — the first was by Justin Silsbee in the 16th minute on a pass from Preston Jernigan. Jernigan also assisted on Luka Cvijanovic’s tally one minute before halftime and added a goal himself in the second half.

Parker Lam had a goal and assisted on Kaleb Webster-Wharton’s goal in the 24th minute for the Crusaders, who received a goal from Will Kranenburg at the 55-minute that extended the lead to 6-0.

Despite the loss, the Chieftains (4-9-1, 2-9-1 Dist. 5), who fell short of the playoffs, received strong play on the edge from senior defender Derrick Geiger.
