St. Mary’s loses heartbreaker to Lakeview

LAKEVIEW — St. Mary’s bid for a second straight Class 3A state playoff appearance came up short with a 27-26 loss to Lakeview in Southern Cascade League football Friday.

The victory gives Lakeview (4-4, 2-1 SCL) second place in the SCL and the league’s second and final state playoff spot. The Crusaders finish the season at 1-2 in league and 4-5 overall.

The Crusaders took a 26-21 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 42-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Aliiloa Kaeo-Wailehua to senior Mike Miles.

“It was a short pass to the perimeter and (Miles) broke some tackles and took it up the sidelines,” said St. Mary’s coach Jamie Young. “That was a senior trying really hard to make it into the postseason.”

The Crusaders’ defense held the Honkers on a fourth down deep in St. Mary’s territory late in the final period but on the ensuing possession, Kaeo-Wailehua was intercepted to set up the winning touchdown — a 4-yard run by Lonnie Brooks with just over two minutes remaining.

St. Mary’s put together a final drive that stalled in Lakeview territory.

Gavin Rajagopal scored on a 79-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the Crusaders. The junior running back rushed for 148 yards on 18 carries but got injured near the end of the third quarter and never returned.

Kaeo-Wailehua threw for three touchdowns but had three interceptions. Alex Heycke was the Crusaders’ leading receiver with five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.

“I’m really proud of the way we battled tonight,” said Young. “We just kept coming back and moving the football.”
