Meek, Comets wrangle Winter Kickoff win

GRANTS PASS — Anchored by Logan Meek, Crater captured four individual championships in the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff wrestling tournament while coming away with a convincing team victory.

Entering the final day of the tournament, the Comets had just a 4.5-point lead over Marshfield but increased the margin to 37 by claiming four of the six championship matches in which the Comets were represented. Crater finished with 241 points and second-place Marshfield had 204.

Meek, named the 38-team event’s most outstanding upper-weight (152 pounds-and-up) wrestler, pinned Marshfield’s Garrett Lefebvre in 3 minutes and 26 seconds to win the 160-pound division.

The Comets’ Zeth Brower (120 pounds), Angel Diaz (126 pounds) and Hunter Hiatt (132 pounds) also won their respective weight classes while Dallas Howard (152 pounds) and Tony Flores (195 pounds) were runners up.

Eagle Point landed fifth place (86 points) with Freddy Barajas capturing a win by injury over Cascade Christian’s Ryan Vidlak. Bradey Thrash also helped Eagle Point by reaching the finals for 132-pounders before being upended by Hiatt.

Gabe Vidlak won at 113 pounds to deliver an individual championship for Cascade Christian, which finished in ninth place (66.5 points) and Ishmael DeLaTorre was triumphant at 285 pounds to help Phoenix take eighth (67 points).

South Medford (53 points) finished in a four-way tie for 11th, Grants Pass (45 points) tied for 17th and North Medford (33 points) finished in 21st place while Ashland (13 points) took 28th.

RENO TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: At Reno, Nev., North Medford’s Cole Zoller lost his first match of the day and Julian Stone went 1-1 in the second day of the massive tournament.

Zoller, a sophomore competing at 132 pounds, dropped to 11-5 overall on the season, while Stone, a junior competing at 220, ran his season record to 15-3.
