Faust, Banuelos fuel North victory

LAKE OSWEGO — Kaison Faust and Oscar Banuelos kept North Medford afloat in the first half, then the Black Tornado pulled away in the second half from Reynolds to win, 84-59, in the Lakeside Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament at Lakeridge High Monday.

Faust and Banuelos scored 33 of North Medford’s 39 points in the first half as the Black Tornado (6-1) took a 39-29 lead.

“We were pretty even in the first quarter,” said North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn. “We just didn’t play very good defense. Our defense slightly picked up in the second quarter, and our offense stayed clicking.”

Faust scored 20 of his 31 points in the first half, while Banuelos had 13 of his career-high 20 points.

Faust also had 14 rebounds, and Banuelos provided six assists and three steals. Quinton Rumrey scored 11, and Jake O’Connor notched five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

North Medford plays Lakeridge at 7 tonight.

Reynolds, of Portland, dropped to 1-6.

Girls Basketball

ENTERPRISE 57, SOUTH MEDFORD 53: At Redding, Calif., after rallying from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter, South Medford committed a pair of costly turnovers with less than a minute to play as undefeated Enterprise handed the Panthers their first loss of the season.

Freshman Toni Coleman poured in 19 points for the Panthers (4-1), who were outrebounded 30-18.

The Panthers’ Ula Chamberlin added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Bella Pedrojetti chipped in 11 points.

EAGLE POINT 49, GOLD BEACH 40: At Eagle Point, Odalis Rincones dropped in 15 points and Eagle Point used a second-quarter surge to get past Gold Beach.

Down by nine entering the second quarter, the Eagles used three 3-pointers from Nicole Lawler to outscore Gold Beach 23-5 and take a 31-23 halftime lead.

Rincones and Ashli Meerten added six points apiece in the frame. Meerten finished with 10 points.
