Central Catholic runs past South Medford

PORTLAND — One 15-point deficit wasn’t too much for the South Medford boys basketball team to overcome. Two 15-point deficits, however, was one too many.

South fell 75-57 to host Central Catholic on Friday, dropping the first game on a double-dip northern road trip; the Panthers will travel about 20 miles west today to take on Hillsboro in another nonleague contest.

After falling behind 15-0 to start the game, South rallied to tie it 32-32 at halftime.

But in the second half, the Rams (3-3) used their superior athleticism to hound the Panthers (2-5), who struggled to handle the defensive pressure.

“Turnovers killed us,” South coach James Wightman said. “They had too much athletic ability.”

Jesse Higgins, a 6-foot-9 senior post, had 16 points and Ty Boster, a senior guard, scored 10 to pace the Panthers.

Freshman guard Darius Gakwasi finished with a game-high 23 points for Central Catholic.
