Tornado tied for second in SWC wrestling

North Medford advanced 13 wrestlers to the semifinals — and berths in the Class 6A state tournament — during first-day action in the Southwest Conference district championships Friday at North Medford High.

The Black Tornado is tied for second place entering today’s final action. The championship matches are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

Defending champion Roseburg is in first place with 202 points, and the Black Tornado and Grants Pass have 131.5. South Medford is fourth with 78.5.

South Medford has six semifinalists.

“Realistically,” said North Medford coach Phillip Lopez, “things are going according to the seeds. There were a couple of upsets.”

The top four at each weight class advance to the state tournament Feb. 16-17 at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
