Ashland falls to Crescent Valley

CORVALLIS — Ashland’s season came to an end Wednesday night, as the Grizzlies fell 66-58 to Crescent Valley in a Class 5A state tournament play-in game.

The Raiders (15-10), who finished third in the Mid-Willamette Conference in the regular season, outscored the Grizzlies 16-5 in what proved to be the decisive third quarter to turn a 35-all halftime score into a 51-40 advantage heading into the final quarter.

“I thought that our intensity and execution on defense led to offense (in the first half). We got some great looks and really spread them out in transition,” Ashland coach Sam Osofsky said. “We had a stretch in the first five minutes of the third quarter where we got a lot of great looks, but they didn’t fall. Those five minutes were a little too much to overcome. We really worked hard defensively and got the shots that we wanted to, but they didn’t fall for us.”

Crescent Valley’s AJ Sandvig scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the first half and connected on five of the Raiders’ six 3-pointers in the game. Tariq Harris — who scored a game-high 31 points against Ashland at the Crescent Valley Invitational in late-December — added 18 points in the win.

Ashland’s backcourt of KJ Pippa and Anthony Swanson combined for more than half of the Grizzlies’ points in the game. Swanson finished with a team-high 18 points, while Pippa — who was named as a third-team all-Midwestern League selection earlier in the week — had 17.

Adam Jones also scored in double figures with 11 points, while Gabe Ekwall added seven for the Grizzlies.

Pippa and Jones each hit three 3-pointers in the game.

Ashland finished the season with a 7-18 record.

The win advanced the Cavemen, the No. 3 team out of the Southwest Conference, to the second round, where they will face top-ranked Jefferson in Portland on Saturday. The winner of that game will move on to the eight-team state tournament at the Chiles Center in Portland.

Grants Pass (16-9) jumped out to a 19-10 lead after one and still led 56-45 heading into the fourth before the visiting Beavers (14-11) rallied to within a bucket of tying the game. Estep, a 6-foot-5 senior wing, hit seven 3-pointers to lead the charge.

The Cavemen responded with a strong finish to win for the fifth time in their last six games.
