Freshmen lead way for South girls in SWC track

A cadre of freshmen stepped up to lead the girls and sophomore Austin Boster won two events and ran two relay legs to pace the boys as South Medford swept Roseburg in a Southwest Conference track and field dual Wednesday at South Medford High.

For the South Medford girls, who beat Roseburg 90-50, freshman Toni Coleman won the 100-meter dash and the 200, freshman Hannah Beers won the 400, freshman Emma Schmerbach won the 1,500, freshman Morgan Burke won the 100 hurdles and freshman Keira Volpe won the long jump.

Coleman, who also ran the anchor leg for the Panthers’ victorious 4x100 relay team, edged teammate Jayda Willis in both the 100 (13.17 seconds) and 200 (28.38), while Beers prevailed in the 400 in 1:06.37. Schmerbach won the 1,500 in 5:02.91, Burke the 100 hurdles in 16.5 and Volpe the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 2.5 inches.

South Medford also got three wins from junior Skylar Farmer with her efforts in the 300 hurdles (53.68), high jump (4-10) and triple jump (32-1), and sophomore Gabi Wisnovsky won the 800 (2:31.31).

Boster won the 200 in 22.94 and the 400 in 50.11 to set the tone for the South Medford boys, who beat Roseburg 86.5-58.5. Boster also ran the second leg for South Medford’s victorious 4x100 relay team and the anchor leg for the Panthers’ victorious 4x400 team.

Also for the South Medford boys, Peyton Shipley won the high jump (6-0), Malik Polk the long jump (20-7.25) and Keegan Losinski the triple jump (39-3.75)

NORTH FALLS TO GP: North Medford senior Kaison Faust won three individual events and junior Turner Nye swept the hurdles events but the Black Tornado boys fell short against Grants Pass, 83-62, at North Medford High.

In the girls meet, senior Victoria Messer was a dual winner but the Cavers’ depth proved too much in a 94.5-50.5 setback in SWC action.

Faust won the 100 in 11.09 seconds and 200 in 22.94 seconds, and scored the top triple jump at 42 feet, 2.75 inches.

Nye won the 110 hurdles (15.66) and the 300 hurdles (43.47) and senior Tyler Parshall earned North’s only other individual win with his effort in the 400 (55.93).

Messer finished first in the 1,500 (5:12.27) and 3,000 (11:27.18). Sophomore Jaida Ross won in shot put (41-7), junior Kamaile Kaeo took first in javelin (114-7.5) and sophomore Jane Ersepke topped the field in long jump (17-2).

PHOENIX BOYS SECOND: At Merlin, Phoenix senior Cory Romig won the 200, placed second in the 100 and ran a leg for Phoenix’s victorious 4x100 relay team, leading the Pirates boys to a second-place showing in a four-way meet at North Valley High School.

Romig won the 200 in 24.36 seconds, besting teammate Adoniram Gamez (24.70), and placed second to North Valley’s David Moreno in the 100, finishing in 12.02 to Moreno’s 11.90.

Also for the Phoenix boys, Joseph Grace won the javelin with a toss of 149 feet, 5 inches.

The Phoenix girls, who placed third in the team standings, were led by a pair of first-place performances by Lupita Alegria (400, 1:04.67) and Sienna Bauer (100 hurdles, 16.48).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 14, KLAMATH UNION 1, 5 inn.: At Klamath Union, Katelyn Willard struck out 10 batters in four innings and Cascade Christian scored nine runs in the first inning to roll to its third win in a row in nonleague action.

Rebecca Clark led the Challengers (5-5) with two hits and two RBIs, while Mia Mayben had a double and two RBIs and Kara Palmer two RBIs.

Klamath Union fell to 3-4.

Girls Tennis

ASHLAND 5, GRANTS PASS 3: At Grants Pass, Ashland’s No. 4 doubles team of Lara Rivera and Bianca Onesti fought back after losing the first set and prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker, and the comeback proved to be the difference in the final team score.

Rivera and Onesti beat Grace Pitzak and Jenna Wiltrout, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.

The Grizzlies also got a three-set victory at No. 3 singles by Zoe Zapf, who beat AnMei Goei, 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.
