Hot-hitting Eagle Point sweeps Thurston

SPRINGFIELD — Eagle Point rapped 38 hits and swept a Midwestern League softball doubleheader against Thurston Thursday, 8-0 and 15-11.

The games were moved up from Saturday because of a threat of rain.

In the first game, Riley Shopp pitched a two-hitter for the Eagles (14-5, 10-3 MWL), striking out 10 and walking one. She was also 3-for-4.

Gillian Willis, Samantha Thompson, Corie Dodge and Miyah Smith each had two hits in the win.

In the second game, every Eagles starter had multiple hits, led by Shopp, who had four, including a triple.

Willis, Thompson, Smith, Ashley Oppelt, Maddie Wood and Kelsey McFall-Whitlatch each had three hits.

THURSTON 8-13, EAGLE POINT 1-3: At Springfield, Midwestern League leader Thurston won both ends of the doubleheader handily, taking Game 2 in five innings.

The Eagles’ Darin Marsh hit his first high school home run, a solo shot in the second game.

Eagle Point dropped to 9-9 overall and 8-7 in league. Thurston is 15-5 and 14-1.

EAGLE POINT INVITATIONAL: At Eagle Point, Phoenix’s Camden Chose shot a 74 to place second in the 11-team tournament at Eagle Point Golf Club.

Chose’s 2-over score helped the Pirates place third with a score of 376, six shots behind runner-up Ashland, which was led by Gus Senn’s 90.

Bandon’s Scotty Kennon was medalist with a 69, and the Tigers won the team title at 312.

Crusader teammates Sammy Miller and Leah Sternenberg won their third in a row since the latter switched from singles to doubles, downing Marina Conaughty and Katie Hartwell, 6-2, 6-1.
