Eagles rally to stun Marist in 8 innings
EUGENE — Ashley Oppelt delivered the biggest hit of Eagle Point’s season thus far as the Eagles dealt Marist its first Midwestern League loss, 4-3 in eight innings, Tuesday at Marist High.
Down a run and facing an 0-2 count with two outs in the seventh, Oppelt drove the ball over the head of the left fielder for a game-saving RBI double. Samantha Thompson’s RBI single with two outs in the eighth drove in the go-ahead run for the Eagles, and they held on thanks in part to a spectacular double play by Thompson for their fifth consecutive victory to improve to 15-5 overall, 11-3 in the MWL.
Marist fell to 16-3, 12-1 in the MWL, and saw its league lead over the Eagles fall to 1 1/2 games with seven games to go.
“It was a big one,” Eagle Point coach John White said.
In the seventh, Riley Shopp hit what turned out to be a crucial double, but the Eagles were in danger of watching their slim MWL title hopes slip away completely when Oppelt came to the plate with pinch-runner Chloe Hurst at second and two down. The junior infielder came through when it mattered most, however.
“It was a rise ball and (Oppelt) just got on top of it and jumped on it,” White said.
In the eighth, an infield single by Emma Stevens followed by a single by Kaylena Hoag set the stage for Thompson, whose clutch hit sent the Eagles to the bottom of the eighth with a one-run lead.
There, the Spartans’ leadoff batter reached on an error to put the pressure back on the Eagles, but moments later Thompson made a fully-extended catch on Marist’s failed sacrifice bunt attempt and quickly threw to first for a double play. Eagle Point pitcher Shopp struck out the next batter to end the game.
Hoag, Thompson, Stevens and Miyah Smith had two hits apeice for the Eagles, while Shopp struck out four and surrendered two earned runs in eight innings to improve to 12-4.
