Challengers rally to deny Glide in tune-up

After capturing the Southern Cascade League baseball title last week — and with the Class 3A state playoffs less than two weeks away — Cascade Christian may have been due for a little lull Monday during a postseason tune-up game against Glide at U.S. Celluar Community Park.

Nevertheless, the Challengers were able to pull it all together after an uninspiring start in the latter innings Monday, rallying from a three-run deficit to collect a 6-5 victory.

After Cascade Christian (14-7) got on the scoreboard in the first inning, the visiting Wildcats tallied four runs in the second inning to grab a 4-1 advantage. Cascade Christian, however, would slowly chip away with one run in each of bottom of the second and third innings before taking the lead for good in the fifth.

The Challengers’ Kyle Reece began the fifth inning with a single, followed by a walk to Joel McLemore. After both were bunted into scoring position, Reece reached home on a passed ball to tie the game at 4-all.

With McLemore now at third, Declan Payne’s sacrifice fly put the Challengers on top, 5-4.

Ryan Vidlak provided the Challengers with an important 6-4 cushion by singling home Davis Federico in the following inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats were able to load the bases and get one run across but Challengers relief pitcher Caleb Knight kept Glide from doing any more damage to preserve the win.

Reece scored two runs and Vidlak had a pair of RBIs for the Challengers, who will next host a team still to be determined in the Class 3A first round on May 23.
