Crater volleyball team opens with MWL sweep

EUGENE — The Crater volleyball team looked sharp as it not only opened the regular season Saturday but began its Midwestern League schedule as well, capturing a pair road victories.

Comets senior outside hitter Nehkyah Ellis amassed 16 kills and 11 digs in a 25-12, 25-23, 17-25, 25-14 triumph over Thurston, then racked up 11 more kills in a 25-5, 25-15, 25-8 thumping of Springfield.

Against Thurston, libero Rane Jensen had 15 digs for the Comets (2-0, 2-0 MWL), who received nine kills from Addison Lowder, six aces from Haylee Hoffmann and 10 digs and five aces from Heather Colmer.

Maya VanHook went for seven kills and a pair of blocks against Thurston while Lowder added seven kills, Jensen 15 digs and 5 aces and Aubrey Kievit 10 digs.

EAGLE POINT SWEPT IN MWL DUAL: At Springfield, Eagle Point wasn’t able to generate enough offense to stay with either Springfield or Thurston in the season- and Midwestern League-opening doubleheader.

Springfield earned a 25-13, 25-22 and 25-22 win over the Eagles (0-2, 0-2 MWL), who received 23 digs from Emmalee Stevens and nine assists from Kierssa Hogan.

In Thurston’s 25-8, 25-22, 25-10 win, Stevens accumulated 22 digs and Hogan nine assists.

NORTH MEDFORD GOES 2-2: At Palo Cedro, North Medford lost its first two best-of-three matches on the afternoon before responding with a pair of sweeps in the I-5 Brawl Tournament.

The Black Tornado was bested by University Prep, 26-24, 25-18, and Pleasant Valley, 25-15, 25-15, before shaking off the rust to top Rio Americano, 25-19, 25-12.

North Medford capped the two-day event with a 4-2 record by upending Mt. Shasta, 25-13, 23-25, 15-8.

Boys Soccer

CATLIN GABEL 2, ASHLAND 1: At South Umpqua, Scotty Gustafson scored from 25 yards out in the seventh minute to give Ashland the lead in its nonleague season opener in a match moved out of the area because of smoke.

The advantage held up for the Grizzlies until Catlin Gabel tied it in the 51st minute. The Eagles scored the game winner in the 67th.

Midfielders Gustafson and Carson Tindell and sweeper Sam Austin had solid games, as did goalie Gabe Giancarlo, who made several fine saves.

Girls Soccer

CATLIN GABEL 9, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0: At South Umpqua, Catlin Gabel freshman Kendrick Dahlin score three goals and had an assist in the nonleague game that was moved north because of poor air quality.

Dahlin had two goals and the assist in the first half as the Eagles took a 6-0 lead against the Crusaders (1-1).

Prep volleyball
