Prep Roundup: North netters sweep Roseburg
North Medford swept Roseburg in Southwest Conference volleyball, 25-9, 25-21, 25-19, and in the process evened its league record Thursday in the North Medford High gym.
“This was humongous,” said Black Tornado coach Malcolm Munson of the sweep. “I don’t know that we’ve done that in forever. We’ve beat them, but not swept them.”
Freshman middle Jackie Aukusitino and senior outside hitter Allie Hertager came up big for North Medford (16-8, 4-4 SWC).
Aukusitino had seven kills and two blocks.
“She had a nice match for us,” said Munson. “She was active in the middle. It was fun to see.”
Hertager played one of her best matches, he said, posting 11 kills and 14 digs.
Lauren Barry contributed 11 kills, five aces and 20 digs, and setter Kyleigh Lopez had seven digs, 28 assists and two aces.
Roseburg (10-8, 5-3) dropped into a second-place tie.
SHELDON 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: At Eugene, South Medford wasn’t able to keep up with Southwest Conference leader Sheldon, which prevailed, 25-16, 25-12, 25-9.
The Panthers dropped to 7-10 overall and 1-7 in the SWC, while the Irish hiked their record to 16-6 and 7-1.
SOUTH EUGENE 3, GRANTS PASS 2: At Eugene, South Eugene triumphed 24-26, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16, 15-8 in the Southwest Conference match.
Devin Ireland collected 20 digs, 13 kills and two aces for Grants Pass (8-15, 2-6 SWC), while Londyn Beck had 13 digs and two blocks and Emily Rund picked up 30 assists.
HIDDEN VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 0: At Phoenix, Hidden Valley, the Skyline Conference’s top team took care of business, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17.
Phoenix (7-16, 3-6 Sky) got eight digs, two kills and two aces from Abigail George, and six kills and a block from Makenna Page against the Mustangs (18-3, 9-0) on senior night.
Josie Bolstad turned in four kills, three blocks and two aces for the Pirates, and Katelyn Hanson had four kills, a block and an ace.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, DOUGLAS 0: Caroline McMahon racked up 20 kills and five aces, leading the charge for host Cascade Christian in a 25-21, 25-18, 25-13 Far West League home sweep.
Olivia Borg posted six kills, Kaylee Cannon added five and Gabbi Burton three for the Challengers (17-4, 8-1 FWL), who picked up 32 assists and four aces from setter Taylor Cave.
With the loss, Douglas fell to 12-7 and 4-5.
ST. MARY’S 3, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 0: At Brookings, St. Mary’s came up with a big rally to win the second set en route to a 27-25, 30-28, 25-14 Far West League sweep.
The Crusaders (10-13, 5-4 FWL) trailed 20-10 in the second set before senior middle Katie Rietmann sparked a huge comeback. She had four blocks in the set after not getting any in the first set.
Rietmann finished with 10 blocks and seven kills. Grace Johnson added seven kills, and Abbie Christman had five blocks and was 20 of 21 serving with four aces.
BONANZA 3, BUTTE FALLS/CRATER LAKE 0: At Butte Falls, Bonanza won the Southern Cascade League match, 25-15, 25-9, 25-14, to drop Butte Falls to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the SCL.
The Loggers had 88 digs, with Lucia Damiana leading with 30. Jaimee Byrum added 18 digs, 14 blocks and four kills. Ellie Columbus had 14 blocks and served six points. Adrianna Watanabe served seven points and Rocky Scott six.
GILCHRIST 3, PROSPECT 0: At Prospect, after coming up short in a back-and-forth opening set, Prospect lost its edge and Gilchrist took advantage with a 26-24, 25-15, 25-13 win.
Freshman middle hitter Tianna McGonagle recorded five blocks and three kills, Mckenzie Thompson also added three kills and libero Leeanna Lands came up with eight digs for the Loggers (3-12, 1-11 Mountain Valley League).
PHOENIX 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 1: At Murphy, trailing by a goal heading into halftime, Phoenix used three second-half scores — two by freshman Victor Martinez — to rally and keep its Skyline Conference record unscathed.
Bryson Flenner connected in the 46th minute to knot the score 1-all on a pass from Ty Clayton.
The Pirates (9-0-1, 6-0-1 Skyline) took the lead 10 minutes later when Martinez found the back of the net off a set-up from Gustavo Pinon. The duo linked up for the third goal in the 64th.
Goalkeeper Moises Rivera came up with three saves for the Pirates, who had a 10-9 shot edge and an 8-1 corner-kick advantage over the Mustangs ( 3-6-1, 2-4-1).
ST. MARY’S 11, LAKEVIEW 0: Will Kranenburg registered a hat trick in the District 5 victory for St. Mary’s at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
The sophomore scored all three goals in the second half while Milan Bobek starred prior to the intermission with a pair of goals.
Preston Jernigan added a goal and a couple of assists for the Crusaders (10-0, 10-0-1 Dist. 5).
HIDDEN VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 1: At Talent, Phoenix contained Hidden Valley for the most part but was unable to generate much offense against the top Class 4A team in the state at Colver Field.
With the Pirates (4-4-2, 3-3-1 Skyline Conference) facing a 2-0 deficit in the first half, Jackeline Rodriguez used a cross from Giselle Perez-Hernandes to score with a header 6 yards from the goal.
Pirates goalkeeper Marcella Badillo finished with 10 saves.
The Mustangs jumped to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Skyline.
