Freshmen lead EP past South Medford

EAGLE POINT — Eagle Point’s strong freshman class, led by heavyweight Joel Montes and lightweight (106 pounds) Luke Callahan, led the way as the Eagles beat South Medford, 54-19, in nonleague wrestling action Wednesday at Eagle Point High School.

Montes sprung a half-nelson late in his match against South Medford’s Antonio Cruz to pick up the pin in 5 minutes, 14 seconds — one of eight pins by the Eagles.

Callahan needed just 40 seconds to pin Calvin Davis, and Eagle Point 152-pounder Kyle O’Neil looked impressive while pinning Lucas Rivera in 3:19.

For the Panthers, freshman Brayden Ostvik took down senior Trigger Weyers in a 10-6 decision.

NORTH MEDFORD 52, THURSTON 27: At Springfield, the Black Tornado won the nonleague dual on the strength of seven forfeits and a pin by Thomas Hamilton at 170 pounds.

Hamilton handled Thurston’s Auron Cramer in 1 minute, 8 seconds to record North Medford’s lone win by fall.

Also for North Medford, Matthew Bryant earned a 13-4 major decision victory over Isaiah Contreras at 160 pounds.

GOLD BEACH 78, PROSPECT 29: At Prospect, Jordan Royce had eight points and Jordan Cristee four rebounds and four steals for Prospect, which fell to 1-4 after the nonleague loss.

Logan Gordon added seven points and Theo James five boards for the Cougars.

Gold Beach picked up its first win of the season after an 0-2 start.
