WRESTLING: North's Stone wins big tourney

RENO, Nev. — North Medford senior wrestler Jullian Stone took on the role of giant killer en route to winning his division Saturday at the Reno Tournament of Champions at the Reno Convention Center.

Stone, who ran his season record to 16-0, decisioned All-American Chris Island, of Vacaville, Calif., 5-2 in the finals of the 220-pound weight class.

The prestigious national tournament attracted 128 teams.

Island is ranked 15th in the nation and last summer became a double All-American when he placed in the top eight in two USA Wrestling tournaments.

After watching film of and “strategizing” for Island, said North Medford coach Phillip Lopez, Stone stuck to his game plan and wore down his opponent.

“He cut off his (Island’s) angles and the kid wasn’t able to get into his offense,” said Lopez.

Stone worked Island for a stalling call and sealed the victory with a takedown toward the end of the match.

“Jullian is shorter,” said Lopez, “and he’s got really good stamina. A lot of 220-pounders are bigger and stronger kids, but he wears them out.”

Stone went 6-0 in the tournament.

The only other North Medford wrestler in action Saturday was junior Cole Zoller, who went 1-1 at 138 pounds and finished the tournament with a 6-2 record.
