Prep Roundup: Crater's Ulrey, Hiatt advance at Reser's

HILLSBORO — Crater wrestlers Tanner Ulrey and Hunter Hiatt each advanced to today’s semifinal round at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions Friday at Liberty High.

Wrestling at 120 pounds, Ulrey opened with a bye and a 17-2 technical fall victory over Aloha’s Justin Fisher. In the quarterfinal round, Ulrey dominated Sweet Home’s Tristan Spencer for a 17-4 major decision. The Crater senior will square off against top-seeded Lorenzo Vasquez of Culver in today’s semifinals.

Hiatt’s day on the mat was a quick one, receiving a bye in the first round before pinning Culver’s Hunter Augustynovich in 1 minute, 54 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Hiatt pinned No. 3 seed Tristin David of Roseburg in 51 seconds. In today’s semifinal round, the senior Hiatt will take on second-seeded Legend Lamer of Crescent Valley.

In the team standings, Crater stands seventh with 77 points. Newberg (120), Dallas (95) and Roseburg (91) lead the team race.

COTTAGE GROVE INVITATIONAL: At Cottage Grove, South Medford and Phoenix will both be well-represented in today’s semifinals following the opening rounds of the two-day Cottage Grove Invitational.

The Panthers advanced five wrestlers into the second day while four Pirates stayed alive. Phoenix currently sits in fourth place with 107 points and South Medford is in seventh with 83.5 points. Glide currently leads the 27-team event with 132 points.

Two Panthers advanced in the 106-pound division. Calvin Davis pinned LaPine’s Carmelo Farfaglia in 49 seconds while Aidan Raina earned a pin on Henley’s Jordan Blofsky in 3 minutes, 20 seconds.

The Panthers’ Brayden Ostvik will face Phoenix’s Ezra DeLuca in the 133-pound semifinals after their quarterfinal victories. DeLuca pinned Glide’s Dannak Towne in 3:59 while Ostvik earned a pin of Corvallis’ Jaden Dart in 4:35.

Kilian Cosgrove also moved on for South Medford and will square off with Cascade Christian’s Cody Havniear in the 132-pound semis. Cosgrove claimed a 14-8 decision over Siuslaw’s Elijah LaCosse and Havniear pinned Douglas’ Tye Cross in 4:46.

Moving on at 145 pounds, Phoenix’s Jacky Hawkins pinned North Eugene’s Ben Patterson in 1:43 while South Medford’s Andrew Hall won by technical fall over Glide’s Corbyn Kangiser.

Pirate teammates Mike Walker and Elijah Santana each won their respective matches at 152. Walker took down Churchill’s Tyler Carey with a pin in 3:21 and Santana picked up an 8-1 decision over Cottage Grove’s David Cox.

Also advancing was Ashland’s 182-pounder Trevor Fulton, who won by fall in 45 seconds over William Seaders of Corvallis.

MWL THREE-WAY: At Eugene, Ashland’s Mary Downs posted twin individual victories and was part of a winning relay as the Grizzly girls finished second by just one point to North Eugene in a Midwestern League three-way meet.

North Eugene’s girls posted 119 points to 118 for the Grizzlies. Crater scored 53.

Downs was triumphant in the 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay. The Ashland girls also received victories from Anna Sloan (100 back) and Sierra Pakrab (100 free).

In boys, Ashland posted four individual victories and a win in the 200 medley relay but fell short of North Eugene in the team standings.

The North Eugene boys won the meet with 122 points, Ashland placed second (91) and Crater was third (74).

Ashland got individual wins from Baylor Wiggins (200 free), Hunter Oliver (200 IM), Chris Frownfelter (100 free) and Oliver Del Rio (100 breast). The same four swimmers made up the first-place 200 medley relay team.

Crater’s Marcus Reyes-Gentry won the 500 free and 100 back and was part of the Comets victorious 200 freestyle relay along with Cordell Vaught, Ike Gillilard and Carson Anderson.
