Crater girls, boys sweep EP in hoops

CENTRAL POINT — Eagle Point’s hopes at a potential upset in Midwestern League girls basketball got a boost by the early results for No. 7-ranked Crater on Wednesday but, unfortunately for the Eagles, that didn’t last long enough at Crater High.

Crater missed shot after shot to leave the Comets with only an 11-8 advantage through one quarter of play, but the lid soon came off the basket and that meant trouble for Eagle Point in a resulting 67-32 runaway win.

“We just didn’t finish at the rim,” said Crater head coach Scott Dippel of early troubles. “We missed a lot of pretty easy shots early on in the first quarter, but then that all changed. We started to hit a lot of mid-range shots, getting some turnovers and turning them into points in the second quarter to kind of pull away.”

In fact, it was a 22-2 run to close the first half that eliminated all doubt for Crater (18-3, 11-1 MWL), which swept the season series against its rival and earned a seventh straight conference victory.

The Comets then pushed that 27-10 lead to 55-20 with a dominant third quarter that saw them drain four 3-pointers — two by Eliza Idiart and one apiece from Sydney Gray and Madison Dutkiewicz — and go 6-for-6 from the foul line in a 28-point outburst.

“Our third quarter was fantastic,” said Dippel. “We just executed everything we wanted to run offensively.”

Gray led all scorers with 14 points to go with five rebounds and three steals, while Idiart had 11 points and Dutkiewicz finished with seven points, six rebounds and three steals.

Kierssa Hogan scored 12 points to pace Eagle Point (8-12, 4-9).
