PREP BASEBALL / SOFTBALL: Sandoval lifts North Medford

HILLSBORO — Senior right-hander Ryan Sandoval struck out 14 and North Medford made the most of its six hits in a 4-1 season-opening victory over Glencoe at Hillsboro Stadium.

Sandoval walked two and surrendered four hits in going 6 2/3-innings. Cody Borraggine, a sophomore pitcher, came in to get the save with the final out.

Borraggine started the North three-run third inning with a single and stole second. Josh Baptiste walked and Ryan Kloek followed with an RBI base hit. Sandoval doubled to score North’s second run, then Gavin Schmidt delivered an RBI single.

The Crimson Tide (0-2) touched Sandoval for a run in the bottom of the inning when Dylan Richards singled was sacrificed to second by Kalvin Stukey and scored on a two-out base hit by William Stephens.

The Black Tornado (1-0) tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on senior Brady Buchanan’s RBI double after Schmidt and Devyn Grafton walked.

North Medford will host North Eugene in a nonconference game at 4:30 p.m. today.

LAKERIDGE 12, GRANTS PASS 3: At Corvallis, Grants Pass was tagged with its first loss of the season in the nonconference game at Goss Stadium.

The Cavemen (1-1) were limited to five hits by four Lakeridge pitchers.

The Pacers (1-0) jumped out to a 9-1 lead after three innings in their season-opener.

ASHLAND 14, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0, 5 inn.: Rowan Amann collected three hits and three RBIs to lead Ashland to a season-opening win at U.S. Cellular Park.

The Grizzlies (1-0) took a 2-0 first-inning lead on Evan McLennan’s two-run double. Amann drove in two more with a triple to complete a four-run second inning.

Ashland lead-off hitter Eli Westrick had three hits and scored three runs while Dane Reynolds added three runs and two RBIs on one hit

For Cascade Christian (0-2), Davis Federico went 2-for-2.

PHOENIX 10, DOUGLAS 1: At Talent, senior pitcher Liam Serean struck out the first nine batters he faced and Phoenix amassed 13 hits in the nonconference victory at Hagler-James Park.

Serean finished with 10 strikeouts and one walk in four innings. He allowed just one hit and an unearned run in the fourth inning.

The Pirates (2-0) staked Serean to an early five-run lead.

Kade Beer paced the Phoenix offense with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBIs. Beer’s sixth-inning RBI double scored the Pirates’ final run.

Mason Stella had three hits and scored three runs while Freedom Martinez and Serean each contributed two hits for Phoenix.

CRATER 15, SOUTH MEDFORD 5, 6 inn.: At Central Point, Kaci Carter drove in four runs and had a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning as Crater erupted for eight runs and pulled away from South Medford in the season-opener for both teams.

Carter finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to go with two runs scored. Hannah Joseph was hit by pitch in her first three at-bats, scored three times, and in her final plate appearance, capped the Comets’ big fifth with an RBI single.

The Comets (1-0) also got an RBI double from Megan Wagner and a run-scoring single from Jamie Cappello an RBI single in the eighth.

ROGUE RIVER 14, EAGLE POINT JV 10, 6 inn.: At Eagle Point, with Jesse Langfield leading the charge, Rogue River chalked up seven runs in the fifth inning.

Langfield finished 3-for-4, drove in four runs, scored twice and stole a pair of bases for the Chieftains (2-0), while Akira Alvarado went 3-for-5 with a single, a double and a triple to go with two scored runs and an RBI.

The Chieftains’ Dylan Nielsen finished 2-for-5 with three stolen bases, Amanda Earnest went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Diana Weilbacher 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Jillian Steinbrook-Cory knocked in a pair of runs.

The game lasted just six innings due to a time limit.

PHOENIX 11, DOUGLAS 8: At Phoenix, Josie Bolstad’s two-run double broke an 8-all tie in the bottom of the sixth inning to give host Phoenix the edge.

With the game knotted 8-all, Raelyssa Goff hit a double to set up runners at second and third base for Bolstad’s pop that sent them home. Taylor Wallack, who went 2-for-2 with a triple, tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to make it 11-8 heading into the final frame.

Halie Bowman was 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for the Pirates (2-0), while Maggie Carrillo finished 3-for-4 and scored twice.

Kara Palmer smacked two doubles and drove in three runs to spark the Challengers (1-0) 12-hit attack.

Rebecca Clark also had two doubles and two RBIs for Cascade and teammates Emily Knight and Ali Modrell registered two hits and one RBI each.
