PREP ROUNDUP: Tornado falls short in softball opener

Grace Johnson had the North Medford softball team rolling through three innings in Friday’s season-opening nonconference matchup with Jesuit.

Things, however, would quickly unravel for the Black Tornado, which committed two errors in the fifth inning that led to a five-run frame for Jesuit and an eventual 10-6 setback at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

“It was a good young team that came down here and had a couple big innings,” said North Medford coach Chris Campbell on Jesuit’s squad. “We hit the ball well and flat put the ball in play, and executed some good base running and got some steals, but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way.”

Ella Ivens responded in the bottom of the fourth for the Black Tornado (0-1), clearing the bases with her three-run double to help North recapture the lead and go up 6-5.

But North Medford’s lead was brief as the Crusaders’ Mac Petitt launched the first of her two home runs — a solo shot — in the top of the fifth to tie the contest at 6-all before Hannah Brink scored on Sammie Petitt’s RBI single, putting Jesuit (1-1) out in front for good.

Johnson finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and scored twice for North Medford, which saw Ivens go 2-for-3 and Chelby Smalley end up 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Kyleigh Lopez came up with a couple of key defensive plays, including an infield snag that helped the Black Tornado escape a bases-loaded situation in the second inning.
