PREP BASEBALL: Macuk's strong pitching lifts Chieftains
CAVE JUNCTION — Nic Macuk allowed just one hit over five innings for Rogue River and was backed by four runs in the first inning to help the Chieftains earn an 8-4 win over Illinois Valley in 2A/1A District 6.
The senior Macuk struck out seven and allowed two earned runs and three walks for the Chieftains (2-5, 2-1 Dist. 6), who led the contest off with three straight hits.
Rogue River’s Caden Tognoni went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored, Derek Nelson added an RBI double and Cameron Hooker drove in a run with his single.
The Cougars dropped to 2-5 on the season and 0-4 in District 6 action.
BROOKINGS-HARBOR 7, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2: John Daly scored on a passed ball and Erich Marschall drove in Sam Martin in the third inning for Cascade Christian but the Challengers couldn’t keep up overall with top-ranked Brookings-Harbor at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Payton Armentrout was 3-for-5 and Jason Vanginderen 2-for-5 to pace the Bruins (13-1, 4-0 District 4), who scored in every inning but the first against Cascade Christian (2-8, 0-4).

SUTHERLIN 5, ST. MARY’S 2: At Sutherlin, after a quick start, St. Mary’s offense fizzled and Sutherlin scored the District 4 victory.
Cobey Aldrich was 2-for-3 with a run for the Crusaders (4-7, 1-3 Dist. 4) while Jonah Hadley and Luke Hamilton came up with RBI singles in the first and second innings, respectively.
The Bulldogs improved to 7-7 overall and 4-0 in District 4.
