PREPS: Crusaders enjoy 'special day' at Running Y

KLAMATH FALLS — When Baylee Hammericksen eagled two of her first three holes at the Klamath Basin Invitational Friday, St. Mary’s girls golf coach Kevin Klabunde sensed something eventful.

Hammericksen, the St. Mary’s sophomore defending 4A/3A/2A/1A state champion, went on to shoot an all-time personal low 65 on the par-72 Running Y Resort course and the Crusaders, who are going for their fourth consecutive state title later this season, posted a 302 team total.

“It’s by far the lowest score in my four years as coach,” said Klabune. “This was a special day.”

Hammericksen began the shotgun start on the 18th hole, then eagled the par-4 first hole and the par-5 second.

“She drove to the fringe on the first hole and chipped in for a two,” said Klabunde, about the first of her consecutive eagles. “On the par-5 she knocked her approach to about six-feet from the cup and made the putt for a three.

“It’s the best score she has ever shot,” added Klabunde. “Everybody on our team shot their best score today. That was kind’ve cool. It was a gorgeous day, the conditions were great and the greens were really nice.”

St. Mary’s senior Kaylee Wu finished second with a 70 and Hammericksen’s younger sister, Crusader freshman Riley, took third (73)

The Crater girls had a good day and finished second in the event with a 362.
