Phoenix's Hernandez tops field at Centennial

Phoenix senior Giselle Hernandez took medalist honors at the 10-school Phoenix Invitational girls golf tournament at Centennial Golf Club Wednesday.

Hernandez carded a 92 on the par-72 layout.

Eagle Point’s Kelsie Monroe and Rylie Smith of Ashland tied for third at 97.

North Bend won the girls team event followed by Cascade Christian (420) and Ashland (426).

PHOENIX INVITATIONAL: Mazama’s Nate Beck posted a par-72 for low score and Mazama won the team competition at Centennial Golf Club.

JJ Thomas of Cascade Christian and St. Mary’s Bryce Stiemert tied for second place with an 81.

Cascade Christian scored 366 for second place, closely trailed by third-place Ashland (367) and fourth-place St. Mary’s (368).

NORTH BOYS, ROSEBURG GIRLS WIN: At Roseburg, Turner Nye won three events to help propel the North Medford boys to a 76-69 victory over Roseburg in the SWC dual.

In girls, Jaida Ross won the shot put and discus as North Medford was edged by Roseburg, 72-64.

Ross’ winning discus of 146-5 ties the Black Tornado junior for second-best throw in the state this year.

PHOENIX 4, HIDDEN VALLEY 3: At Grants Pass, Phoenix swept all three singles matches and picked up its second 4A/3A/2A/ District 3 victory of the season.

Bella Hoye set the tone for Phoenix with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Emma Kimball in No. 1 singles.

The straight-set victory by Courtney House and Ally Ellis in No. 2 doubles proved to decisive for the Pirates.
