PREP ROUNDUP: Crater romps in sweep of twin bill

CENTRAL POINT — Crater broke out the big bats Friday to secure a Midwestern League softball sweep over North Eugene, posting 17 extra-base hits among the Comets’ combined 26 hits in a pair of five-inning wins, 19-0 and 12-0.

“They took some good swings today and I was pleased with that,” said Crater coach Chris Arnold. “We definitely put the ball in play and looked to hit the ball hard.”

Marissa Eilenberger hit a home run in each game for Crater, belting a two-run shot in the fourth inning of Game 1 and another two-run blast in the first inning of Game 2, to finish her day 5-for-7 with five runs and seven RBIs.

Jordan Peterson combined to go 5-for-6 with seven runs and six RBIs for the Comets (15-4, 10-0 MWL).

Jamie Cappello allowed only one hit through four innings in each game to pick up both wins, striking out seven with one walk in the opener and fanning five with one walk in the nightcap. Caitlyn Warner pitched a hitless inning in each game against North Eugene (2-14, 1-7).

Cappello went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in Game 1, while Haley Hillyer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Cheyenne Burton 2-for-4 with one RBI.

In Game 2, Kaci Carder had three doubles, scored three times and drove in four runs.

GRANTS PASS 4-3, SHELDON 2-4: At Eugene, Grants Pass missed its chance at a key Southwest Conference sweep when Emma Neuman belted a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 2 to allow Sheldon to salvage a doubleheader split.

Devin Ireland’s RBI double highlighted a four-run surge by Grants Pass (16-3, 6-3 SWC) in the fourth inning that led to a win in the opener. Skylar Padgett and Toni Stevens each had RBI singles in Game 2 for the Cavers.

Neuman finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Jordan Henderson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in Game 2 for Sheldon (16-3, 8-1).

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 6, WILLAMETTE 2: At Eugene, Mallory Meilicke’s two-run double sparked a five-run seventh inning to lead Cascade Christian to a nonconference road win at Class 5A Willamette.

Meilicke finished with two hits, one run and three RBIs for the Challengers (16-2), who also saw Katelyn Willard strike out 13 with three walks and three hits allowed to the Wolverines (6-10).

Mia Mayben singled to lead off the seventh and later added an RBI hit in the same frame to finish with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Kara Palmer had an RBI single in the seventh as part of her two hits.

CRATER 4-4, NORTH EUGENE 0-3: At Central Point, Crater’s Garrett Dance boosted the Comets to the Midwestern League sweep with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in Game 2 at Anhorn Field.

North Eugene (3-15, 2-8 MWL) scored a run in its half of the sixth to go up 3-0. Highlanders pitcher Cameron Parks was working on a one-hitter.

But Trever Davis got Crater (9-11, 5-5) started when he reached on an error. After a walk to Jacob Memmott and a flyout, Andy Lacey singled in Davis. A strikeout ensued before Dance belted his first homer of the season to right field.

Ethan Scott blanked North Eugene in the seventh to finish his five-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk. Only one run was earned.

In the opener, Blake Hollingsworth pitched a fine game as well, allowing four hits, fanning six and walking two.

Davis supplied a two-run triple in the sixth for breathing room and went 2-for-4 with a run. Payton Anhorn and Ike Gilliland each had two hits and a run for the Comets.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5-6, ST. MARY’S 3-4: Cascade Christian sophomore Davis Federico supplied a two-run single to highlight a pivotal four-run third inning in the opener and Jadon Rullamas added a three-run single in the fifth inning of Game 2 to lead the Challengers to a District 4 sweep at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Federico and Elijah Smith each had two hits in Game 1 for Cascade Christian (5-10, 3-6 Dist. 4), and Federico added a two-run home run in the fourth inning of Game 2 to finish 2-for-3. Rullamas went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.

For St. Mary’s (4-12, 1-8), Aliiloa Kaeo-Wailehua had two hits in each game, while Cobey Aldrich drove in a run in the opener and Luke Hamilton went 2-for-4 in Game 2.
