PREP TENNIS: Retiz, Ashland girls win MWL titles

NORTH BEND — Ashland’s Alyssa Retiz and Sascha Wells each advanced to the finals in singles at the Midwestern League girls tennis championships to help the Grizzly girls capture the overall team title Saturday at North Bend High School.

With Ashland also qualifying the doubles team of sophomores Zoe Zapf and Jessica Hitchcock for next week’s Class 5A state tournament at the Portland Tennis Center, the Grizzlies were able to edge Churchill for the team trophy.

Retiz, a sophomore, used excellent placement to wear down Churchill’s Nicole Hampton for a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in Saturday’s semifinals, while the freshman Wells had to change gears as she rallied for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Churchill’s Youha Tanaka in her semifinal. Wells had been aggressive in shooting for winners early in her match but altered her approach and forced longer rallies to deny Tanaka.

In the championship finals, the top-seeded Retiz again used her poise and consistency to outlast third-seeded teammate for a friendly 7-5, 6-3 triumph.

In doubles, Zapf and Hitchcock lost 6-1, 6-0 North Bend’s top-seeded duo of Macy Metcalf and Adrianna Frank but rebounded in the third-place finals to edge Churchill’s Grace Moyer and Kazuki Tanaka.

SWC CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Roseburg, South Medford’s Ariana Watson came up short in the consolation singles finals, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Rachel Finkle of South Eugene.

MWL CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Eugene, Ashland freshman Josh Datz placed third in singles behind a marathon third-place final that saw him score a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 triumph over Thurston junior Dalton Martin at the Eugene Swim & Tennis Club.

Datz began his day with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to second-seeded junior Bryan Duncan of Thurston before the No. 4 seed returned to outlast Martin in a match that lasted 31/2 hours.

Datz will return to the court for the 5A state championships next week at the Portland Tennis Center.
