PREP TRACK: Phoenix's Grace, Challengers' Stephens take third

GRESHAM — Phoenix’s boys and girls track teams got off to a solid start Friday on Day 1 of the Class 4A state championships at Earle Klapstein Stadium at Mt. Hood Community College, scoring two individual placers and advancing nearly its entire contingent into the finals after successful preliminaries.

Leading the charge Friday was Phoenix senior Joseph Grace, who placed third in the boys javelin with his effort of 161 feet, 2 inches — just 1 inch ahead of fourth-place finisher Brian Place of Marshfield. Siuslaw’s Ryan Rendon-Padilla won the event at 186-11.

Pirates freshman Sophia Stubblefield ran a freshman class record for Phoenix in the 3,000 meters to place fourth.

Stubblefield, who was seeded fifth, finished in 10 minutes, 40.18 seconds to break the previous record set by Nevina DeLuca in 2012. Siuslaw’s Hannah Rannow won the event in 10:14.30.

“In seven events we’re contesting in, we have people in six of the finals, so it went about as well as it could,” said Phoenix coach John Cornet. “It was a good day today.”
