PREP SOCCER: Phoenix settles for Skyline tie

MURPHY — HIdden Valley’s Colin Sinsabaugh blasted a free kick into the upper V in the 76th minute to give the Mustangs a 1-1 Skyline Conference tie in boys soccer with Phoenix Monday.

The Pirates had been riding a 1-0 lead following a first-half goal and a defense that made scoring opportunities scarce for Hidden Valley.

But with four minutes remaining, Sinsabaugh sent a shot past the reach of the Phoenix keeper.

Pirates sophomore forward Victor Martinez put Phoenix (3-1-2, 1-0-1 Skyline) on the scoreboard with a goal from 5 yards out on a set-up from Caden Gallegos at the 31-minute mark.

The Pirates’ defense, led by Dan Martinez and Randy Rodriguez, did well disrupting the Mustangs’ offense until the latter stages.

Phoenix had 12 shots to Hidden Valley’s nine and had a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.

The Mustangs moved to 4-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Skyline.

ST. MARY’S 5, RV ADVENTIST 0: St. Mary’s scored all its goals in the first half, then played down a player or two throughout the second half of the District 5 contest.

William Kranenburg scored twice for St. Mary’s (5-0-1, 4-0 Dist. 5), and Nathan Sternenberg had a goal and two assists.

Cooper Hopkins and Radek Bobek added the other goals.

Milan Bobek, Radek Bobek and Charles Reade contributed assists.

Rogue Valley Adventist dropped to 0-4 overall and in district play.

Girls Soccer

HIDDEN VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 1: At Talent, Phoenix had scoring opportunties but couldn’t convert often enough in the Skyline Conference match at Colver Field.

The Pirates’ lone goal came with two seconds remaining in the contest, when Alex Hernandez found the back of the net.

Phoenix (2-2-1, 0-2 Skyline) had seven shots on goal.

The Mustangs improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in Skyline play.
