PREP ROUNDUP: Gillock scores late as North ties Ashland

ASHLAND — North Medford almost ran out of time as a it played catch-up with Ashland in nonconference boys soccer Friday at Walter A. Phillips Field.

With 24 seconds remaining, the Black Tornado’s Will Gillock took a pass from Robert Valencia and skirted a shot under the goalkeeper for a 3-3 tie.

“It was pretty exciting,” said North Medford coach Xavier Valdez, whose team is 3-3-2.

Each team got off a desperation shot in the final seconds but neither was close.

Ashland is 6-2-1.

The Grizzlies took a 3-0 lead midway through the first half, striking in the second minute when Simon Cropper finished from inside the box after a pass from Carson Pindell.

Ashland’s Davidson Graham tallied in the sixth minute, assisted by Scott Gustafson.

In the 21st, Graham made it 3-0 off a pass from Noah Aguilar.

“We were gambling a little bit in the first half,” said Valdez. “We were trying to pack our forward line and get a goal early, but that didn’t work, so we had to change our formation and beef up our midfield. I’m happy with the result.”

The Black Tornado’s first goal came in the 28th on a header by Braden Byrd.

Freshman Zach Taylor scored his first high school goal in the 42nd on a low shot past the goalie after being fed by Jesus Nunez.

Midfielders Jeremiah Martinez and Nathan Qualls helped shore up North Medford’s defense.

For Ashland, Scott Gustafson, Kona Makai and Sam Austin played well.
