PREP SOCCER: Phoenix ekes out win over Henley

TALENT — In a battle of two of the Skyline Conference’s top squads, the Phoenix boys soccer team had its way in every facet against Henley Monday at Colver Field.

While the Pirates did have trouble finishing its scoring opportunities, their defense limited Henley to just two shots on goal and claimed a 1-0 victory.

After a scoreless first half, Randy Rodriguez wasted no time giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead by scoring 30 seconds into the second half. Rodriguez collected a pass from Ty Clayton and drove in a left-footed shot past the far post from 18 yards out.

The Pirates (5-1-2, 4-0 Skyline) finished with 18 shots on goal and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Henley, which was tied for second with North Valley at 2-1 in the conference entering the day, dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in league.

ST. MARY’S 3, CANYONVILLE ACADEMY 0: At Canyonville, St. Mary’s remained undefeated despite a sluggish performance in the District 5 match.

The Crusaders (7-0-1, 6-0 Dist. 5) scored twice late in the first half.

Cooper Hopkins tallied in the 35th minute and Milan Bobek in the 37th. Both players gathered in loose balls and booted them into the net.

William Kranenburg scored St. Mary’s final goal in similar fashion in the 55th.

Girls

PHOENIX 0, HENLEY 0, tie: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix’s Alex Hernandez nearly broke a scoreless tie with 50 seconds remaining, but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar for the Skyline Conference tie.

Hernandez’s shot came from about 20 yards out for the Pirates (2-3-2, 0-3-1 Sky), who out-shot the Hornets (2-3-3, 1-1-2), 10-5.

Senior center forward Makenzie Christensen played well for the Pirates by controlling the pace of the game and creating shots for her teammates.
