No. 4 Phoenix slips past Mazama
KLAMATH FALLS — Fourth-ranked Phoenix finally took control with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes to earn a hard-fought 2-0 triumph over host Mazama in Skyline Conference boys soccer Thursday.
After a scoreless opening 65 minutes, Randy Rodriquez ran onto a nice through ball from Victor Martinez to net a breakaway goal for the Pirates (6-1-2, 4-0-1 Skyline).
Four minutes later, Caden Gallegos tacked on an insurance goal on an assist by Miguel Conchas.
Phoenix outshot Mazama (1-8, 1-4) by a 15-4 margin, with Tucker Speaks picking up the clean sheet in goal.
“It was pretty much a defensive battle for the first three-quarters of the game,” said Phoenix head coach Dennis Flenner. “We had excellent play today from Randy Rodriquez and Victor Martinez, they absolutely ran the game today.”
