PREP SOCCER: Black Tornado girls shut down Cavers
Two picture-perfect goals gave North Medford a 2-0 shutout victory over Grants Pass in a Southwest Conference girls soccer showdown Tuesday at Hoffbuhr Field.
The Black Tornado (6-5, 3-4 SWC) scored in the 30th minute when team captain Brooklyn Snow passed the ball to Sophie Elam, who perfectly set up a streaking Taylor Denn for a 20-yard shot in the far side of the net for a 1-0 start.
In the 34th minute, Fenley Parker dribbled down the side of the field and crossed a ball that sophomore Kira Pyka headed into the net.
The North Medford defense was able to thwart 10 shots on goal by the Cavers, with goalkeeper Jazzlyn Ross supplying three athletic saves to keep the clean sheet.
CRATER 6, EAGLE POINT 0: At Central Point, Mattilyn Pierce scored once in each half to help power Crater to its first Midwestern League win at Dutch Meyer Field.
Pierce scored in the 12th minute off an assist by Emma Stanley and in the 51st minute on an Emma Bohn assist for the Comets (4-3-4, 1-3-1 MWL).
Taryn Dance got it all started in the sixth minute when she converted a corner kick by Allison Waters, who made it 3-0 in the 36th minute after gathering a through ball from Dance.
Ayden Wycoff added a second-half goal on a rebound effort after Kayleigh Gugliotta’s shot caromed off the goalkeeper for Eagle Point (0-11, 0-6).
Gugliotta capped the scoring on a header off a corner kick by Mia Tewes.
SOUTH MEDFORD 1, SOUTH EUGENE 1: Other than in the 43rd minute, when both goals were scored, neither team could break through in the Southwest Conference match.
South Medford’s Kam Calhoun was taken down in the box in the 43rd minute, then deposited a penalty kick.
Moments later, SWC leader South Eugene (6-1-4, 5-0-2 SWC) caught the Panthers off guard and converted a long pass into a goal at the other end.
