Hopkins leads St. Mary's boys to ninth straight win

Freshman Cooper Hopkins put the match out of reach in the second half when he connected on back-to-back goals to seal the undefeated St. Mary’s boys soccer team’s 4-0 triumph over Cascade Christian on Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

The Crusaders (9-0-1, 8-0-1 Special District 5) had a tough time cracking the Challengers’ defense until two minutes before halftime when Xavier Warfield set up Will Kranenburg’s goal that gave St. Mary’s a little momentum heading into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Hopkins gave the Crusaders breathing room with a goal in the 50th minute on a pass from Nate Sternenberg and tallied again in the 66th minute after collecting a rebound off a shot by teammate Milan Bobek.

Bobek would get another chance in the 74th minute and was successful, giving the Crusaders a 4-0 lead.

The St. Mary’s defense was led by a back line of Andrew Rietmann, Noah Stillwell, Charlie Reade and Luke Bennion, while goalkeeper Hunter Holdermann was credited with a save.

The loss snapped the Challengers’ four-game winning streak. The fell to 5-3-2 overall and 5-2 in Special District 5 play.

ROGUE RIVER 3, CANYONVILLE ACADEMY 2: At Rogue River, a second-half red card had Rogue River at a one-player disadvantage over the final 12 minutes of the match but the Chieftains weathered the storm and were able to hold off Canyonville Academy’s comeback for their third-straight win.

The Chieftains (3-5, 3-5 Special District 5) had a cozy 3-1 lead at halftime but Jimmy Geiger’s red card penalty at the 68-minute mark helped Canyonville Academy cut Rogue River’s lead to 3-2 on a goal with four minutes to play.

Josh Bunker’s first goal of the season put the Chieftains on the scoreboard in the 21st minute on an assist by Garren Decker, who scored a goal of his own with a penalty kick nine minutes later to give Rogue River a 2-0 advantage.

Bunker set up Zyles Perryman’s goal in the 33rd minute that bolstered the Chieftains lead to 3-0.

Goalkeeper Braydon Daniels made eight saves — three were in the final 12 minutes — and Asher Brotherton along with Geiger played well defensively.

Girls Soccer

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5, LAKEVIEW 2: At Lakeview, senior Bryton Plankenhorn’s hat trick fueled Cascade Christian’s Special District 5 victory over host Lakeview.

Plankenhorn tallied in the fourth minute on a free kick, and connected from 18 yards out in both the 24th and 48th minutes for the Challengers (8-2-1, 3-1-1 SD5).

Freshman Autumn Murray and Bryonie Jordaan each added a goal for Cascade Christian.

The loss dropped the Honkers to 3-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in Special District 5 play.

Men’s Soccer

ROGUE CC 3, CLARK COLLEGE 1: Rosendo Juarez scored in the sixth minute and Jhoel Sarraude added an insurance goal in the 36th as the Ospreys improved to 4-6-3 overall and 2-5-1 in the Northwest Athletic Conference.

Women’s Soccer

CLARK COLLEGE 4, ROGUE CC 1: Anna Serna scored the only goal of the day for the Ospreys, who fell to 5-6-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the NWAC.
