PREP SOCCER: Phoenix tops North Valley
MERLIN — After a big win over Hidden Valley last week, the Phoenix boys soccer team gained even more separation in the Skyline Conference standings with a 1-0 victory over host North Valley on Monday.
Caden Gallegos collected a pass from Victor Martinez from 18 yards out and drilled the contest’s lone goal in the 18th minute.
It was the sixth straight victory for the Pirates (9-1-2, 7-0-1 Sky) and gives them a win over the conference’s second- and third-place teams, which are also two of the top teams in the state.
The Knights dropped to 6-4-2 overall and 5-3 in Skyline play.
SOUTH EUGENE 4, NORTH MEDFORD 1: At Eugene, Nathan Mejia put North Medford on the scoreboard in the first half but the Black Tornado was unable to keep pace with host South Eugene.
The Black Tornado fell to 4-5-4 overall and 2-4-3 in Southwest Conference play while South Eugene jumped to 7-2-4 and 6-1-2.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, PAISLEY 1: At Paisley, Cascade Christian avenged a home loss to Paisley over the weekend with a District 5 victory on the Broncos’ home turf.
After Paisley grabbed an early lead, the Challengers’ Jonny McCoy used a pass from Cody Reece to knot the score 1-all. Dom Lewis later gave the Challengers (6-4-2, 6-3 Dist. 5) the lead for good on a set-up from Ryan Crowl.
Lewis returned the favor by finding Crowl, who connected on a 20-yarder in the 58th minute to pad Cascade Christian’s lead.
NORTH VALLEY 1, PHOENIX 0: At Talent, Phoenix continued its stellar defensive play but for the second straight game gave up a late game-winning goal, with eight minutes remaining, at Colver Field.
It was also the second game in a row the Pirates (3-6-2, 1-6-1 Sky) were shutting out a ranked team late. Phoenix fell to Hidden Valley with less than five minutes left.
The Pirates’ Sandra Villa had four shots on goal and a couple breakaway opportunities while goalkeeper Emma Truex came up with four saves.
The Knights improved to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in Skyline.
