PREP ROUNDUP: North sweeps South, ties for second
North Medford struggled at first, but upended rival and host South Medford, 27-25, 25-15, 25-19, in the final Southwest Conference volleyball match of the season Thursday.
The victory pulled North Medford into a tie for second place in the SWC with South Eugene. Both qualified for the state playoffs, which begin Wednesday.
Junior setter Hannah Drysdale had a very efficient evening with 31 assists, seven digs and five kills to lead the Black Tornado (15-6, 7-3 SWC). Lauren Barry was electric at the net with 20 kills and also recorded 15 digs defensively. Catherine Rostel registered 11 kills.
The North Medford defense consistently answered the spirited South Medford rallies. Audrey Yechout had eight digs, two aces, one block and two kills from the outside hitter position. Jordan Sandler (11 digs) and Sara Hamlin (seven digs) contributed defensively.
ROSEBURG 3, GRANTS PASS 1: At Grants Pass, Roseburg handed Grants Pass its 14th straight defeat in a Southwest Conference match, 25-15, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20.
Devin Ireland led Grants Pass (5-17, 1-9 SWC) with 19 kills, three aces and 18 digs. Makayla Sikahema added five kills, and Emily Rund finished with 40 assists, 14 digs and three kills.
LOST RIVER 3, BUTTE FALLS 0: At Merrill, Lost River claimed third place with the 25-16,25-22, 125-16 Southern Cascade League win, dropping Butte Falls to fourth in the final standings.
The Loggers (9-8, 6-6 SCL) overall, 6-6 SCL) visits first-place Bonanza Saturday in a league playoff. The winner plays the Glide-Lost River winner for state seeding.
Against Lost River, Ellie Columbus had seven kills, six blocks and nine service points for the Loggers. Rocky Scott had five kills, 30 digs and 12 points. Grave Beaver recorded 27 digs and five assists, and Lucia Damiana notched 22 digs and seven assists.
PHOENIX 5, HENLEY 1: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix recorded its seventh straight victory to claim the Skyline Conference title with one game remaining.
The Pirates (10-1-2, 8-0-1 Sky) got three goals from Victor Martinez, two in the first half and one in the 68th minute. Brother Dan Martinez scored in the 24th minute on a well-placed header off an assist from Cain Vargas. Caden Gallegos also scored a goal when he sent a hard shot into the box and it deflected off a Hornet defender into goal for a 4-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Randy Rodriquez fed Victor Martinez for a goal.
HENLEY 2, PHOENIX 2: At Phoenix, Henley scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to secure victory in an intense Skyline Conference matchup.
The Pirates (3-7-3, 1-7-1 Sky) had to plug players into different positions since they were without senior leader Makenzie Christensen, who sustained a torn ACL in Monday’s match against North Valley.
Senior goalkeeper Emma Truex had seven saves of the 10 shots Henley took on goal, but it was not enough to turn back visiting Henley. Phoenix has one game remaining against Mazama to earn a postseason play-in game.
