Holland leads Ashland to MWL title

SPRINGFIELD — Ashland and Crater, the teams ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in Class 5A boys cross country, respectively, lived up to those distinctions in the Midwestern League district meet Wednesday at Springfield High.

Ashland had the first four placers, led by senior EJ Holland, and scored 23 points to win the meet. Crater was second with 47.

In the girls meet, sixth-ranked Crater cruised to victory with 28 points, and No. 8 Ashland was runner-up with 78.

Holland, the defending state champion, and teammate Reed Pryor were the only boys to break 16 minutes over the 5,000-meter course. Holland clocked 15:39.8, and Pryor went 15:53.1.

The Grizzlies’ Arlo Davis (16:00.3) and Cameron Stein (16:06.6) were next across the finish.

Gage Reed of Crater, the three-time team state champion, was fifth in 16:17.7.

The top four teams and top five individuals in the boys and girls meets advanced to state Nov. 9 at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Crater’s Presley Robison captured the girls crown with a time of 19:01.5. Teammate Jade Hopkins was fourth in 19:38.1.

Sage Reddish led Ashland, placing fifth in 20:09.5.

6A Southwest Conference

SOUTH BOYS ADVANCE: At Eugene, sophomore Michael Maiorano placed fourth to lead the South Medford boys to state in the SWC district meet.

The Panthers placed third with 76 points, behind South Eugene and Sheldon. The top three teams and top seven individuals in boys and girls advanced to state Nov. 9 at Lane Community College in Eugene.

In the girls meet, no local teams or individuals made it through. South Medford placed fourth.

Maiorano’s time was 15:58.90 over 5,000 meters. Teammates Connor Singer, DJ Scott and Ethan Foster finished 14 to 16, respectively.

Joshua Scull was 24th for North Medford in 17:31.90.

In girls, South Medford’s Emma Schmerbach was ninth in 19:49.10. North Medford’s Cammeo Ramirez was 20th in 20:43.40.

4A Skyline Conference

STUBBLEFIELD WINS DISTRICT: At Gold Hill, Phoenix’s Sophia Stubblefield captured the Skyline girls district title, and teammate Kyla Potratz was second at Valley of the Rogue State Park as the Pirates qualified for the state.

The top two teams and top five individuals for boys and girls advanced to state Nov. 9 at Lane Community College in Eugene.

The Phoenix girls, ranked sixth, scored 48 points to place second to Klamath Union (40).

KU also won the boys meet. The Pirates were fourth and will send fourth-place Noah Marshall to state.

Stubblefield, a sophomore, improved on her fourth at district last year. Her winning time for 5,000 meters was 19:21.60. Potratz, only a freshman, wasn’t far behind in 19:27.17.

The junior Marshall’s time was 17:06.36.

SORANI TO STATE: At Eugene, Cascade Christian’s Jake Sorani on Tuesday advanced to the 3A boys state meet by placing third at Lane Community College.

Sorani, a sophomore, ran the 5,000-meter course in 17:35.90.

He was the only local runner to advance. The Challengers placed third and St. Mary’s fourth. The top two teams and five individuals advanced.

David Noble paced St. Mary’s, placing seventh in 18:38.50.

In the 3A/2A/1A girls meet, three teams moved on, and St. Mary’s placed fourth. Cascade Christian didn’t field a full team.

Cascade Christian’s Katelyn Willard was eighth in 21:24.40, and St. Mary’s Susanna Schatz was 12th in 21:49.80.
